RESUMO

Mastitis is a significant infectious disease in dairy cows, resulting in milk yield loss and culling. Early detection of mastitis-prone cows is crucial for implementing effective preventive measures before disease onset. Current diagnosis of subclinical mastitis (SCM) relies on somatic cell count assessment post-calving, lacking predictive capabilities. This study aimed to identify metabolic changes in pre-SCM cows through targeted metabolomic analysis of urine samples collected 8 wks and 4 wks before calving, using mass spectrometry. A nested case-control design was employed, involving a total of 145 multiparous dairy cows, with disease occurrence monitored pre- and postpartum. Among them, 15 disease-free cows served as healthy controls (CON), while 10 cows exclusively had SCM, excluding those with additional diseases. Urinary metabolite profiling revealed multiple alterations in acylcarnitines, amino acids, and organic acids in pre-SCM cows. Metabotyping identified 27 metabolites that distinguished pre-SCM cows from healthy CON cows at both 8 and 4 wks before parturition. However, only four metabolites per week showed significant alterations (p < 0.005). Notably, a panel of four serum metabolites (asymmetric dimethylarginine, proline, leucine, and homovanillate) at 8 wks prepartum, and another panel (asymmetric dimethylarginine, methylmalonate, citrate, and spermidine) at 4 wks prepartum, demonstrated predictive ability as urinary biomarkers for SCM risk (AUC = 0.88; p = 0.02 and AUC = 0.88; p = 0.03, respectively). In conclusion, our findings indicate that metabolite testing can identify cows at risk of SCM as early as 8 and 4 wks before parturition. Validation of the two identified metabolite panels is warranted to implement these predictive biomarkers, facilitate early intervention strategies, and improve dairy cow management to mitigate the impact of SCM. Further research is needed to confirm the efficacy and applicability of these biomarkers in practical farm settings.

Degradation of hydrogenic habitats in climate change increased rapidly. It is important that we take actions to stop this process. Solution is to increase efficiency of water usage by ecosystems - especially water based ones. Building devices for delaying surface water runoff - like locks and dams - should improve hydrogenic habitats conditions and allow surrounding ecosystems use rainwater more efficient. Modelling of small retention in forests is an important aspect in decision making schema. Aim of this paper is to point optimal solutions for height and placement of devices which delay surface water runoff to set necessary water table level for renaturalization and maintenance of degrading natural habitats. Data used for analyses were acquired in the Polanów Forest Inspectorate in West Pomeranian voivodeship because of the topography diversification and the drainage infrastructure presence. There were three research plots selected based on decreased stability of habitats and historic data stated that there were natural water reservoirs, which were drained in past. Based on 2012 LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) point cloud the digital terrain model (DTM) was built. Water outflow points - melioration canals - were identified and analysed for optimal device localization. In following part of research specific data for each hydrogenic habitat were used to model height of devices which delay surface water runoff. Optimal level of device and area covered by water were set for each site separately. The results were handed over to the investor for implementation, then the compliance of the assumptions of the simulation of raising the water table with the as-built field measurements was checked. Study shows that it is possible to use laser technology to optimize location and height of devices which delay surface water runoff what allows to restore degraded hydrogenic habitats. Presented method supports small local retention what increases limited water resources in this region, decreases rapid runoff of surface water which causes frequent floods. Proposed method of modelling the location and height of the dams or locks is universal. Even though results are unique for each object the method is possible to be applied to every other situation.

Although ferrets are becoming increasingly popular as companion animals, their population in households is still far lower compared to cats or dogs. This results in a much smaller number of ferret specialists, and thus poorer diagnosis of various diseases, including the Aleutian disease. Aleutian disease is a slowly progressing viral disease which can cause different symptoms in these animals. The virus can also cause symptoms in different species of animals, but in the case of ferrets, there is relatively less information on about both the prevalence and symptoms of this disease. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the presence of antibodies and the virus itself in ferrets from two regions of Poland. Blood samples and rectal swabs were obtained from 61 domestic ferrets from Mazowieckie and Dolnoslaskie voivodships. The presence of antibodies was determined using serological methods and real-time PCR analysis was performed to determine presence of viral DNA. Serological analyses demonstrated that 49% (n = 30) of the ferrets had antibodies against Aleutian disease virus (ADV). No relationship was observed between the prevalence of antibodies and age, sex, habitual residence or origin of ferrets. The real-time PCR did not confirm DNA of the ADV in any of the blood and rectal swab samples. Obtained results suggest that ADV circulates in the analyzed population of ferrets, therefore further studies in this direction should be carried out.

Viscum album L. is a plant of great importance due to its influence on the host trees and, by extension, entire ecosystems. The species is also significant to humans-on the one hand, because of its use in medicine, and on the other, because of the growing threat it poses to the stability of conifer stands. Therefore, it is important to recognize the future range of three mistletoe subspecies (Viscum album subsp. album, V. album subsp. austriacum, and V. album subsp. abietis). Modelling of the potential range of these subspecies was performed using MAXENT software. Locations were collected from literature and databases. A total number of 3335 stands were used. Bioclimatic data for the current conditions and three future scenarios (SSP 1.26, SSP 3.70, SSP 5.85) were downloaded from the CHELSA database. The results confirmed that the temperature is the key variable on the potential range of the analysed subspecies. V. album subsp. abietis is withdrawing from its range according to all scenarios. In the case of V. album subsp. austriacum, a slight range shift is visible. Only the V. album subsp. album will expand non-directionally. The reason is most likely a very large number of host species and greater genetic variability compared to the subspecies found on conifers.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of long-acting selenium (Se) preparation in sheep. The experimental material comprised Skudda ewes and their lambs. The animals were divided into two equal groups: C-control, and E-experimental. Between days 70 and 80 of pregnancy, group E ewes were injected with Se preparation (Barium Selenate Injection, BVP Animal Care, Ireland) at f 1 mL/50 kg body weight. Hematological, biochemical and immunological blood parameters as well as Se levels were analyzed in ewes. The growth rate of lambs, the dimensions of the musculus longissimus dorsi (MLD) cross-section, and fat thickness over the loin-eye area were also determined. It was found that barium selenate stimulated the mechanisms of humoral and cellular immunity. The injection was an effective form of Se supply, which was confirmed by its increased concentration in the blood serum of lactating ewes. The offspring of the experimental ewes were characterized by a faster growth rate, and they achieved significantly higher body weight (p ≤ 0.05) at 100 days of age. The lambs also had significantly higher parameters of MLD (p ≤ 0.05) at similar carcass fat content.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a long-acting selenium (Se) preparation administered to sheep. The experiment was conducted on 30 dams and 36 lambs divided into three equal groups of 10 dams and 12 lambs each: Control-C, and two experimental groups-E (Se administered to pregnant ewes) and EI (Se administered directly to lambs after the colostral period). The Se preparation (Barium Selenate Injection, BVP Animal Care, 50 mg/mL) was administered by injection at 1 mL/50 kg (1 mg Se/kg) body weight (BW) to group E ewes in the third month of pregnancy (between 70 and 90 days) and to group EI lambs between 4 and 7 days of age. The following parameters were determined: Se concentration in the blood of ewes, milk yield, milk composition, Se concentration in milk; hematological, biochemical, and immunological parameters and Se concentration in the blood of lambs; growth rate and in vivo measurements of lean meat and fat content in lambs. Barium selenate significantly improved the Se status of dams and lambs, regardless of whether it was administered to pregnant ewes or directly to lambs in the first week of their life. The milk of ewes receiving the Se preparation was characterized by higher concentrations of fat and dry matter. The Se preparation induced significant changes in immunological parameters, thus enhancing defense mechanisms in lambs. The Se preparation exerted more stimulatory effects on humoral and cellular immune responses when administered directly to lambs after the colostral period (group EI) than to pregnant ewes (group E). The results of this study indicate that the long-acting Se preparation delivers benefits to sheep by boosting their immunity and, therefore, improving performance.

BACKGROUND: A healthy immune system plays a particularly important role in newborns, including in calves that are far more susceptible to infections (viral, bacterial and other) than adult individuals. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of HMB on the chemotactic activity (MIGRATEST® kit), phagocytic activity (PHAGOTEST® kit) and oxidative burst (BURSTTEST® kit) of monocytes and granulocytes in the peripheral blood of calves by flow cytometry. RESULTS: An analysis of granulocyte and monocyte chemotactic activity and phagocytic activity revealed significantly higher levels of phagocytic activity in calves administered HMB than in the control group, expressed in terms of the percentage of phagocytising cells and mean fluorescence intensity (MFI). HMB also had a positive effect on the oxidative metabolism of monocytes and granulocytes stimulated with PMA (4-phorbol-12-ß-myristate-13-acetate) and Escherichia coli bacteria, expressed as MFI values and the percentage of oxidative metabolism. CONCLUSION: HMB stimulates non-specific cell-mediated immunity, which is a very important consideration in newborn calves that are exposed to adverse environmental factors in the first weeks of their life. The supplementation of animal diets with HMB for both preventive and therapeutic purposes can also reduce the use of antibiotics in animal production.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of colostrum-supplemented transition milk on the growth rate of newborn calves. Thirty-six day-old female Holstein calves with a birth weight of 43.4 ± 5.5 kg were randomly assigned to a treatment group and a control group. On day 1, all calves received one portion (3 kg) of colostrum within 2 h after birth. Between the second feeding and the age of 5 days, control calves received only transition milk that had been collected from dams shortly before feeding, and the treatment group received 1.5 kg of colostrum collected from dams on day 1 and 1.5 kg of transition milk from subsequent milkings. Monthly body weight and average daily gain were used to measure growth performance. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at multiple time points to evaluate the biochemical and immune status of calves. Colostrum-supplemented transition milk increased the concentrations of serum immunoglobulins, triacylglycerols, cholesterol and total protein. The activity of lactate-dehydrogenase and ceruloplasmin decreased, whereas lysozyme activity increased with time in the control group. It can be concluded that additional five days of colostrum feeding positively influences non-specific humoral immunity indicators and serum biochemical parameters in dairy calves.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate (HMB) on the chemotactic activity, phagocytic activity, and oxidative metabolism of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes in goats. Goat kids aged 30 ± 3 days were divided into two groups of 12 animals each: I-control, and II-experimental. Experimental group animals were fed a diet supplemented with HMB in the amount of 50 mg/Kg BW; whereas the diets of control goats were not supplemented. At the beginning of the experiment (day 0) and on experimental days 15, 30, and 60, blood was sampled from the jugular vein to determine and compare chemotactic activity (MIGRATEST® kit), phagocytic activity (PHAGOTEST® kit), and oxidative metabolism (BURSTTEST® kit) of peripheral blood granulocytes and monocytes by flow cytometry. The analyses of the chemotactic and phagocytic activity of granulocytes and monocytes revealed statistically higher levels of phagocytic activity in the experimental group than in the control group, as expressed by the percentage of phagocytic cells and mean fluorescence intensity. HMB also enhanced the oxidative metabolism of both granulocytes and monocytes, expressed by the rate of oxidative metabolism and mean fluorescence intensity after stimulation with Escherichia coli bacteria and PMA (4-phorbol-12-ß-myristate-13-acetate).

Research Highlights: The achieved results indicate that in the period of 2010-2016, the number of sporting events (running, cycling and walking) as well as the number of participants has increased many times. Methods: A geostatistical method, i.e., kriging, was used to check the distance-based relationship between agglomerations proximity and sporting events. The questionnaire surveys were used to determine the reasons for physical activity in the forest. Results: The analysis of the impact of the scope of the urban agglomerations on the number of organised physical activities proved that, in both cases (Warsaw and Tricity), most events take place in forests located close to these cities. The larger the distance to Warsaw or Tricity, the lower the number of sporting events and the lower the number of participants. The reasons why people take up physical activity are mainly to improve their health and physical condition, reduce stress and improve wellbeing. Conclusions: The conducted research indicates a significant increase in the importance of non-productive functions of forests located in the vicinity of urban agglomerations, as well as the need for continuous monitoring of actions taken by foresters to promote active lifestyles.

BACKGROUND: Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV), an enveloped, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus from the Flaviviridae family, is a globally distributed bovine pathogen. BVDV infection in cattle, despite having a wide range of clinical manifestations, is invariably responsible for significant economic losses. To counteract these losses, various schemes to control and eradicate BVDV have been implemented, although safe drugs effectively inhibiting the replication of the virus are still lacking. The purpose of this study was to characterize the antiviral effect of naturally occurring proteins and peptide, such as bovine lactoferrin, chicken egg lysozyme, and nisin from Lactococcus lactis, used both individually and in combination, against the cytopathic NADL strain of BVDV in vitro. After determining the cytotoxicity level of each protein or peptide to MDBK cells, its antiviral effects were evaluated using virucidal, cytopathic effect inhibition and viral yield reduction assays. In addition, the influence of the tested compounds on the intracellular viral RNA level was determined. RESULTS: The highest efficacy among the single treatments was achieved by bovine lactoferrin, which was effective both at the early stages of viral infection and during its entire course, although the effect weakened over time. Nisin and lysozyme were effective at later stages of infection, and the intensity of their effect did not diminish with time. Nisin+lactoferrin and lysozyme+lactoferrin combinations demonstrated stronger antiviral effects than did the single substances. The nisin+lactoferrin mixture present during the whole period of infection produced the strongest anti-BVDV effect in our entire research on both the extracellular viral titre (titre reduction up to 2.875 log ≈ 99.9%) and the intracellular viral RNA level (reduction up to 89%), and this effect intensified over the incubation time. CONCLUSIONS: The tested substances could be applied in bovine viral diarrhoea prevention and therapy, especially when used in combination.

Nisin, a lantibiotic bacteriocin, has been used for years as a natural food preservative. In addition to its antimicrobial activity, nisin also shows immunomodulatory properties, and the nisin-producing Lactococcus lactis strain has been successfully tested as a probiotic in weaned piglets. However, the impact of nisin on porcine immune cells has not yet been explored. The objective of the present study was to examine the in vitro immunomodulatory effect of nisin on porcine peripheral blood leucocytes. The whole heparinized blood samples or freshly isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were incubated with different nisin concentrations (0, 1.56, 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, 25 or 50 µg/ml) for 1, 24, 48 or 72 hr. Escherichia coli bacteria were used to stimulate blood phagocytes, while concanavalin A and lipopolysaccharide from E. coli were used as mitogens. Control cells remained unstimulated. MTT colorimetric assay was used to evaluate PBMCs viability and mitogenic response. Phagocyte activity and T-cell proliferation were measured by flow cytometry. Flow cytometer was also used for immunophenotyping of T cells. Cytokine levels in the culture media were determined using commercial immunoassay (ELISA) kits. The highest concentration of nisin exhibited proliferative activity (p Ë‚ 0.05), stimulated interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) production (both at p Ë‚ 0.001), and increased the percentage of CD4+ CD8+ T cells (p Ë‚ 0.001) among unstimulated leucocytes. After cell stimulation, however, the highest nisin concentration showed antiproliferative activity (p Ë‚ 0.05), decreased phagocytic functions (p Ë‚ 0.05) and inhibited the synthesis of IL-6 (time- and concentration-dependent effect). As a typical bacterial product, nisin had a stronger impact on innate immune cells, and its effect on T cells was likely a consequence of the modulation of the activity of antigen-presenting cells. Nisin may be a good candidate as an immunomodulator in pig breeding.

INTRODUCTION: Coxiella (C.) burnetii, the aetiological agent of Q fever, is able to modulate the macrophage/T-lymphocyte axis in an infected organism and impair synthesis of monokines and lymphokines. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The purpose of this research was to determine the levels of the cytokines that play a key role in the response to C. burnetii antigens (IL-1ß, IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-γ and TNF-α) in the serum of animals originating from an infected herd prior to vaccination (day 0) and at 1, 7, and 21 days afterwards. RESULTS: The vaccination of animals did not affect the production of IL-6, IL-1ß, or IL-2. The serum levels of these cytokines were too low to measure in most of the samples. The initial levels of TNFα, IFNγ, and IL-10 were higher in seropositive than in seronegative animals, although significant differences between seropositive shedders and seropositive nonshedders appeared only in the levels of IFNγ and IL-10. Additionally, the course of the post-vaccination response concerning these two cytokines was different among seronegative nonshedders, seropositive nonshedders, and seropositive shedders. CONCLUSION: It seems that analysis of the IFNγ and IL-10 concentrations in animal blood serum may have some practical value in an assessment of the health status of seropositive animals and post-vaccination response.

BACKGROUND: Mastitis is a common disease in dairy cattle throughout the world and causes considerable economic losses each year. An important aetiological agent of this disease is bacteria of the genus Streptococcus; hence, exploring the mechanisms of virulence in these bacteria is an extremely important step for the development of effective prevention programmes. The purpose of our study was to determine the ability to produce biofilm and the occurrence of selected invasiveness factors among bacteria of the genus Streptococcus isolated from cattle with the clinical form of mastitis in northeastern Poland. RESULTS: Most of the isolates analysed demonstrated an ability to produce biofilm (over 70%). Virulence genes were searched for in the three most common streptococci in our experiment: S. agalactiae, S. uberis and S. dysgalactiae. For S. agalactiae, only four genes were confirmed: rib (33%), cylE (78%), bca (37%), and cfb (100%). The genes pavA, scpB, bac and lmb were not present in any of the tested strains. The dominant serotypes of the species were Ia (n = 8) and II (n = 8), in addition to some strains that were not classified in any of the groups (n = 6). Out of the eight selected genes for S. uberis (sua, pauA/skc, gapC, cfu, lbp, hasA, hasB, hasC), only one was not found (lbp). Finally, two genes were chosen for S. dysgalactiae (eno and napr), and their presence was confirmed in 76% and 86% of the strains, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The experiment showed that strains of Streptococcus spp. isolated from dairy cattle with clinical cases of mastitis in the northeastern part of Poland possess several invasiveness factors that can substantially affect the course of the disease, and this should be considered when developing targeted prevention programmes.

Recent intensive development of nanotechnology has broadened the use of noble metal nanocolloids in alternative medicine. Meanwhile, silver and copper nanoparticles are tested as potential feed additives in pig farming. Experiments on rodents prove that metal nanocolloids easily interact with macrophages and lymphocytes, although the specific nature of pigs' immune system means that rodent tests may not reflect fully the responsiveness of porcine T cells. Our purpose was to demonstrate the effect of a commercial gold nanocolloid on percentages and proliferation of T lymphocyte subpopulations and on IL-2 and IL-10 synthesis in porcine peripheral blood mononuclear cells tested in vitro. The nanocolloid was not cytotoxic to porcine leukocytes, nor did it affect resting T cells. However, high nanogold concentrations inhibited proliferation of mitogen-stimulated CD4+, CD4+CD8α+ and CD4-CD8α- T cells by down-regulation of the IL-2 synthesis and increased the percentage of CD4-CD8α- double negative T cells, probably by depressing their ability to express a CD8α marker after activation. The observations implicate potential immunosuppressive activity of nanogold and strong influence of nanoparticles on CD4-CD8α- T cells, the most abundant subpopulation in young animals, suggests its particular effect on a developing immune system.

RESUMO

Kynurenic acid (KYNA), a secondary product of the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan degradation, known mainly as an endogenous neuroprotectant, shows also immunotropic properties. Some quantities of KYNA are present in food and are effectively absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Since the spleen is an important target of dietary immunomodulators, the aim of the study was to determine the effect of exogenous KYNA on murine splenocytes. Splenocytes isolated from adult BALB/c mice were used in the study. Firstly, the effect of increasing KYNA concentrations (0-5 mM) on the viability, and proliferative and cytokine response (interleukin 1ß [IL-1ß], IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor α [TNF-α]) of murine splenocytes under in vitro conditions was determined. Then, proliferative and cytokine responses were determined in cells derived from animals receiving kynurenic acid in drinking water at concentrations of 2.5, 25, or 250 mg/l for 7-14 days. Cytokine levels were measured using commercial immunoassay (ELISA) kits, and cell viability and proliferation was determined with MTT reduction assay. Exogenous KYNA was characterised by a low level of cytotoxicity towards murine splenocytes, and was well tolerated by the animals receiving it in drinking water. As expected, it exhibited anti-inflammatory action towards the activated splenocytes, under both in vitro and ex vivo conditions. Surprisingly, however, KYNA itself influenced the activity of resting, non-stimulated cells, exerting an immunostimulant effect in vitro, and an immunosuppressive effect under ex vivo conditions. The obtained results indicate not only anti-inflammatory, but also more complex, immunomodulating properties of KYNA, which require more detailed investigation.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of ß-hydroxy-ß-methylbutyrate acid, on parameters of meat performance in goats as well as on selected parameters of non-specific humoral defense. An experiment was performed on 24 Alpine kids divided into two equal groups: I - control and II - experimental. Over a period of 60 days, the animals were fed an HMB-supplemented diet. The following meat performance parameters were determined: body weight, daily gains, growth rate, the dimensions of musculus longissimus dorsi (m.l.d.) sections and fat thickness over the loin "eye". Selected indicators of non-specific humoral immunity were determined in the blood serum of kids: lysozyme activity, ceruloplasmin activity and gamma globulin content. It was found that the kids administered HMB had a significantly higher body weight on days 30 and 60 of the experiment compared to the control group. The kids in this group also had a significantly more favorable musculature development. Simultaneously, a significant impact of HIMB on the examined immunological indices was found. The significance of differences in relation to the control group was confirmed statistically for lysozyme activity and ceruloplasmin activity on days 30 and 60, while the content of gammaglobulins was confirmed statistically on days 15, 30 and 60 of the study. It was also found that the addition of HMB had a stimulating impact on immunity and growth rate as well as on the development of muscles. It is thus justified to administer HMB to early-weaned kids to enhance their rearing parameters.

Kynurenic acid (KYNA), an endogenous tryptophan metabolite, is a selective ligand of the GPR35 receptor, expressed mainly on the immune cells. In inflammatory conditions, by affecting this receptor, KYNA inhibits the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines and probably protects tissues from oxidative damage. However, we lack data regarding the effect of exogenous KYNA on the activity of immune cells in healthy individuals. The objective of this study has been to determine the influence of kynurenic acid administered to mice in different doses (2.5, 25 or 250 mg/l) and for different time periods (3, 7, 14, 28 days) in drinking water, on the activity of their peripheral blood leukocytes. The determinations comprised the proliferative activity of lymphocytes (MTT assay) and the phagocytic activity as well as the respiratory burst activity of granulocytes and monocytes (Phagotest, Phagoburst). It was only the lowest KYNA dose that influenced the mitogenic response of lymphocytes, namely by increasing the proliferation of T cells. The impact on the phagocytic activity was varied with KYNA dose and administration time. However, all the KYNA doses significantly lowered the activity of oxidative burst in phagocytes, which was probably associated with its antioxidant properties. In the light of the research results, kynurenic acid may find applications as an immuno-modulating agent able to correct an excessive or insufficient response of phagocytizing cells, protecting an organism from oxidative stress.

The objective of this study was to determine the stimulating effect of the Biolex-Beta HP (ß-1,3/1,6-D-glucan) dietary supplement on selected parameters of specific and non-specific humoral and cellular immunity in rats immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide. The experimental material comprised 40 Wistar rats, divided into two equal groups: control and experimental. In the course of 3 successive days, the rats from the experimental group were administered cyclophosphamide intramuscularly at a rate of 50 mg/kg BW per day. On the 8(th) day of the experiment, 10 control and 10 experimental rats were sacrificed, and total protein and γ-globulin levels, lysozyme and ceruloplasmin activity were determined in the blood serum. The proliferative response of blood lymphocytes after stimulation with lipopolysaccharide or concanavalin A, respiratory burst activity and the potential killing activity of phagocytes were determined in whole heparinised blood. Starting on the 8(th) day of the experiment, the feed of the remaining rats from the experimental and control groups was supplemented for 14 consecutive days with Biolex-Beta HP at a rate of 50 mg/kg BW per day. On day 22, arterial blood samples were collected and immune parameters were determined. The results indicate that ß-1,3/1,6-D-glucan has a positive effect on the analysed parameters of non-specific cellular and humoral immunity after cyclophosphamide-induced suppression. Nevertheless, the observed effect only marked a return to the norm, as most of the analysed parameters were merely restored to their initial levels, with the exception of lysozyme activity, which considerably exceeded the level noted before immunosuppression.

Probiotics are a nutritional tool for disease prevention. It has been proposed that stimulation of immune response could affect the growth-promoting properties of antimicrobial growth promoters as well as the control of foodborne pathogens. The current study compares immune response in the blood of 280 non-infected and Salmonella-infected chickens fed either with the growth promoter avilamycin or with one of five probiotic strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which also showed growth-promoting properties. All of the probiotic strains stimulated superoxide anion production and the proliferation of leukocytes, while raising lysozyme and γ-globulin levels (by up to 65%, p < 0.01), which are important factors in native and cell-mediated immune defense against pathogens. In contrast, among the two strains examined, specific Salmonella antibodies were induced only by L. salivarius, and not by B. animalis, as assessed by the ELISA method and confirmed by an agglutination reaction (p < 0.05). In the avilamycin-fed group, both non-infected and infected chickens showed decreased levels of these immune markers (by 30%) and increased levels of ceruloplasmin by up to 35%. In contrast, the probiotics suppressed acute-phase response assessed by ceruloplasmin by up to 32%. This correlation implies that various antimicrobial feed additives have a distinct effect on immunomodulation, which may affect different mechanisms in the nutrition-related metabolism associated with the rate of weight gain in chickens. The data could contribute to the design of innovative antimicrobial feed additives in the food industry and consequently to well-being of humans.
